ATEX
Introduction
The legislation for explosion safety is divided into two areas that are connected to each other: Directive 114 (2014/34/EU) for manufacturers of explosion-proof equipment and Directive 153 (1999/92/EC) for the safety of workers in hazardous areas. Companies are obliged to regularly inspect their machines and equipment that are used in hazardous areas. Electrical installations in zone areas must be assessed according to the NEN-EN IEC 60079-17 standards.
Description
Within Dymenzions you have the possibility to store your ATEX equipment in an item database. This way you can check and search your equipment in a structured way. Dymenzions also offers you the possibility to manage and store documentation of your zone classification and EPD (explosion protection document).
With Dymenzions you can easily manage the planning and execution of the various inspections. Dymenzions has included the following types of inspections:
- Delivery Inspection / First Inspection
- Periodic check
- Random inspection
These tests include an assessment of whether the existing electrical components comply with the zones that have been determined, which can be determined on the basis of, for example, the Ex markings on the equipment. It is also important that the correct gas category has been applied and the correct temperature class has been selected. Furthermore, there is an assessment to check whether machines and equipment are sufficiently earthed and whether the potential equalisation is sufficiently guaranteed. Measurements can be part of these inspections.
These inspection types can be carried out according to the following inspection methods:
- Visual
- Accurate
- Detailed
Depending on the results of the samples, the circumstances within your production company and the legal guidelines, Dymenzions will give you advice. For example, Dymenzions will advise you which equipment, within a certain period, must be inspected according to a certain inspection method. Optionally, Dymenzions can also make a schedule and generate schemes for this.
Test results can be entered in an interactive planning board. A current overview of the test results and the ATEX conformity status of your installation can be found in a clear dashboard. The test history for each individual item can be called up and you have the possibility to generate various reports. Defects, overdue inspections and necessary repairs can be managed in an action list.
Add-ons
Inspection instrument
Dymenzions can be expanded with the ATEX Inspection Tool. The ATEX Inspection Tool is a software program written for an (Ex) PDA or Tablet. This program instructs and guides an engineer through the different types of inspections using questions. The routing and subject of the questions depend on the type of equipment being inspected and the answers to previous questions. This way, only relevant questions are asked at the right time. After the inspection rounds, answers and results of the inspections can easily be uploaded to Dymenzions.
The ATEX inspection device offers you the following advantages:
- Faster way to perform ATEX inspections
- Direct digital processing of the answers in PDA or Tablet
- No paperwork
- No unnecessary checklists or unnecessary questions
- All necessary checks, in accordance with legislation and guidelines, are processed and cannot be forgotten by engineers
- Automatic classification of the status of each ATEX item immediately after inspection
- Easily upload test results to Dymenzions
- Dymenzions automatically takes actions and selects necessary repairs from the test results
Using our ATEX inspection tool you can support the ATEX inspection process and improve your ATEX compliance.
Advantages
- Manage your ATEX equipment in an article database
- Automatic scheduling of various types of ATEX inspections and random samples
- Advice on inspection methods and frequency based on sample results and installation conditions
- Overview of test results and test history in a dashboard
- Defects and repairs can be managed in an action list
- Generating reports of your ATEX inspections
Conclusion
With Dymenzions you can manage your ATEX equipment in a structured manner and guarantee your explosion safety through efficiently planned inspections and sampling.

What is ATEX and why is it important?
ATEX stands for “ATmosphères EXplosibles” and refers to the European directives that guarantee safety in explosive atmospheres. The legislation is divided into two directives:
- ATEX 114 (2014/34/EU) : Focuses on the manufacturer and the safety of explosion-proof equipment.
- ATEX 153 (1999/92/EC) : Focuses on the protection of workers in potentially explosive atmospheres.
Companies are required to regularly inspect equipment used in hazardous areas according to the NEN-EN IEC 60079-17 standards. This is where the strength of Dymenzions ATEX comes to the fore.
